Project Background
This was Nelson Mandela's first home when released from prison. He lived here from 1992 to 1998 where South Africa history was literally written. The brief was to design a home that felt like hotel but not a museum. # months of the year fellows are hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the rest of the year the establishment is to be self sustaining. The concept was to create an art narrative with arts works through the space to tell the life story of Nelson Mandela. These are pictures duri

This is front facade of the new proposed building. This was a heritage site so we could not alter the old structure. We could only make the addition. All additions needed to feel new and could not look like or link back to the heritage building.

Hotel - Lobby, and Lobby Lounge
This is the double volume in the lobby that leads off to the bar and restaurant.
This is the reception area. The reception desk is constructed from Coronation Bricks, which was the original bricks used to construct the home. I used these bricks to create the reception desk.
This was a waiting bench that I was inspired to paint black and white taking inspiration from a photograph of Nelson Mandela waring a black and traditional white necklace.
This is the waiting lounge.
In the waiting lounge, I installed a photograph of Nelson Mandela reading his newspaper on the front porch. I brought this to life by having this photograph recreated into a bronze statute of Nelson Mandela that greets as you enter the hotel. This picture is installed as you leave the hotel, this tying the storytelling together.
